Teacher Education

Teacher education plays a vital role in supporting high-quality education. In Further Education (FE), teachers often enter the profession with valuable industry experience, and many train while already working in teaching roles. This means that initial teacher education and continuing professional development need to recognise the distinctive nature of FE teaching, including the importance of subject-specialist pedagogy and preparing students for technical pathways.

We work with partners to build evidence about what effective teacher education looks like in FE, and how teachers and trainers can be well prepared to succeed in their roles. This includes research into subject-specific pedagogies, the role of teacher educators who prepare the next cohort of FE teachers, and international work exploring how different systems support teachers and trainers to develop the right skills while maintaining flexible routes into the profession.

The resources and updates on this page bring together Gatsby-supported work on teacher education, including research findings and practical materials for those involved in developing and supporting FE teachers.
